Get Ready for Dude Ranching
The Inside Scoop
By Dale Leatherman
Dude ranching is all about riding. If you and your mount are well matched, you'll have a wonderful time. Trust your wrangler's judgment on horse selection.
 What it's all about
|
A sure way to earn the contempt of wranglers and other riders is to abuse your horse, even through ignorance. Follow all instructions. Be gentle.
Western horses go very well on a loose rein. If your horse's breathing becomes labored, take a rest stop. Always let him drink, but only a couple of long swallows if he's hot. If he starts limping and his feet are free of stones, get off and walk.
Skimming a basic book on riding Western will give you handy information and raise your confidence level.
One last tip: After your first day in the saddle you will be sore all over. Gut it out and ride the second day at least for an hour. You'll be fine after that. Stretching helps too.
