Taking time out on an Everest expedition
Have a great trip!

In climbing, getting to the top is not that important. It's mostly about the experience, and trying your best. It's been said that if you come back alive, and come back friends, then you've succeeded. This is not so hard to do.

Chances are good you'll make the summit, though, if you maintain a good attitude and stay healthy. The stress of travel, of a new environment, and a sudden change in lifestyle can seem overwhelming. Just relax, enjoy your surroundings, and know that you are in good hands. Take simple, common-sense precautions: Most people live a rather sedentary life at home. Out climbing you'll burn a lot more calories than normal, so you must eat and drink a great deal more than normal. Avoid uncooked foods, unpurified water, and overindulgence.

Climbing can be a relatively safe and enjoyable experience if you use good judgment and do your homework. Ask expert advice when choosing a mountain and shop around for the right guide company to lead you there. (Many outfitters offer different types of trips to the same peaks.) Furthermore, read about the countries you will visit before departure. The finest climbs are usually in remote places, inhabited by people with a unique culture. You will be a guest in their country; treat them and their environment with respect.

One final warning: Climbing is addictive; it will probably change your life.
