Located in the Lolo and Bitterroot National Forests in Montana and Clearwater and Nez Perce National Forests in Idaho.

The Selway Bitterroot Wilderness encompasses 9,767 acres located on the Lolo, reachable on forest roads west off of US Highway 93. Lolo lands make up only a small portion of the Wilderness, but excellent hiking is found along the South Fork of the Lolo Creek and on a Two-day round trip to 9,069 foot Lolo Peak. About 38% of this Wilderness is on the Bitterroot Forest. This portion is readily accessible from local roads along U.S. Highway 93 and the road following the Nez Perce Fork of the bitterroot River.

One-fourth of this massive wilderness area, one of the first to be designated under the Wilderness Act of 1964, lies in the Clearwater National Forest. Elevations range from 1,800 feet on the Selway and Lochsa Rivers to mountain peaks as high as 8,800 feet along Bitterroot Divide Hundreds of miles of trails are maintained through the Wilderness. Mechanized equipment, including bicycles, are not permitted in the wilderness or on trails leading into the wilderness. The natural qualities of the wilderness cannot be protected without the help of all wilderness visitors.
