Primary Functions: Provides technical expertise to other Federal and State agencies and Indian
tribes in restoring, maintaining or improving fishery resources of New Mexico and west Texas. Primary
fish species include the endangered Pecos blunt-nose shiner, Colorado squawfish, Gila trout, and Pecos
pupfish as well as rainbow trout and channel catfish.
Habitat: Management areas include riverine ecosystems managed for native fishes, and artificial
impoundments and regulated streams for sportfish.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation on hatchery. Limited brochures available.
Special Note: Field research emphasis is on native fish of the San Juan and Pecos River systems.
Activities include recovery programs and coordinated interagency efforts to manage threatened and
endangered fish species.
