The more than 120 miles of trails in the park range from short level surf walks to the steep Precipice Trail. Connecting trails enable hardy hikers to scale several Acadia peaks in one trip. Between 1915 and 1933, John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed and directed the building of 57 miles of carriage roads, a network of woodland roads free of motor vehicles for hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders and carriages. Activities on some of the 50 miles of carriage roads that are within the park today include cross-country skiing and limited snowmobiling.

To get a sense of the scale and complexity of the carriage road system, we provide two views of the carriage roads: an overview map, and a detail map of the roads south of Jordan Pond, where the system is the most complex. Also see the full park map to put the hiking opportunities in context.

The Eagle Lake Loop Road is specially graded for bicycles. Isle au Haut has 18 miles of hiking trails and makes a great day trip, or, if you have a permit, a wonderful overnight excursion.

Note: Unless otherwise indicated, round trip distances indicate the route up and down the same trail. Many trails, however, can be combined to make loops and longer routes. For more details, refer to a map, guidebook, or park ranger.
