PARKS
Grand Canyon National Park
Kaibab/ Coconino National Forest
Bordering the National Park on both rims are thousands of square miles of pinyon-juniper, ponderosa pine, and spruce fir forest overseen by the National Forest Service. These forests offer recreational opportunities not found in the park. For starters, you can camp for free inside the National Forest (except in developed campgrounds, which cost $10-25 per campsite per night). Cycling inside the park is limited to roads, but the nearby forests boasts some tempting mountain bike trails. And while campfires are always taboo inside the canyon, they're permitted most of the time inside the National Forest. And the forests themselves are worth seeing. On the South Rim, you'll find the world's largest stand of ponderosa pines. When mature, these fragrant orange-trunked trees create a spacious forest with a soft, open floor. The North Rim's forests and meadows boast an abundance of wildlife, including mountain lions, cougars, coyote, deer, and wild turkey.
