Hiking

Trail users will find 2,500 miles of recreation trail available for hiking. Each ranger district has its own personality. The rugged Leavenworth offers scores of possibilities. History buffs might be interested in seeking out an old mining camp there. You'll probably want help making a selection. Check a good guide book, and also ask at the rangers station. Some trails follow ridge tops, others brushy valley bottoms. Chelan, incorporating a big part of Lake Chelan, is another hiking gem. Many trails offer views of Lake Chelan; others have good fishing; some have both. The Sawtooth Wilderness takes in spectacular high country and should be high on the wilderness adventurer's list. Besides having portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Naches Ranger District has two other luminaries: the Boulder Cave Trail is a gentle trail that ends up at an archway set into a mountain, out of which water flows. A pleasant, unusual excursion. The Naches Pass Trail is an old trail, used by settlers and soldiers in the mid-1850s. The Naches area is a good pick for those who like to explore riparian areas.

The Pacific Crest Trail also passes through the Lake Wenatchee District. Phelps Creek is a popular destination, but don't overlook the White River, Rock Creek or Nason Ridge Areas.

Since this is the national forest, many of these trails allow horses and mountain bikes. Some were even developed for motorcycles. Come winter, many of these same trails have cross-country skiiing. Some trails are open to a variety of uses, while others are restricted to non-motorized use alone. All trails within Wilderness are closed to motorized access.
