Scenic Driving
Two dedicated scenic drives stand out. The Chiwawa Auto Tour (no, you won't be seeing a lot of rat-like dogs) explores a postcard pretty area rich in wildlife and historical lore. Indians, miners, and cross-country skiiers have left their mark here, now softened by time.
For those who want rugged, the Leavenworth Ranger District has some great canyons and other assorted rocky terrain. Icycle River is the big draw, for good reason. Imagine 20 miles of picturesque views of rock outcrops, jagged peaks and a rushing, boulder-strewn river. But don't just pass by Chumstick-Sugarloaf, which runs north of Leavenworth through rolling hills, past picturesque cabins and farms.
There are approximately 5,000 miles of forest roads which provide access to campgrounds, trailheads, scenic vistas, woodcutting and berry picking areas, hunting areas, rockhounding areas, lakes, and streams. In the winter, snow closed roads are used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
