Hiking - Silver Creek Trail

This trail consists of two trail segments connected by one mile of dirt road which crosses private land. The first segment begins below Gooseberry Reservoir and follows along Gooseberry Creek until it reaches a natural gas pipeline crossing. It then climbs the steep grassy hillside west of the creek to the dirt road. Length of this segment of trail is 3 miles. The dirt road is then followed northeast until it ends above Silver Creek. The trail them descends into Silver Creek and parallels the stream on the north side. The trail ends at its junction with Fish Creek National Recreation Trail #130. This segment of trail is 4 miles long. Vegetation along both segments of trail consists primarily of sagebrush-grass slopes and willows along the stream course. At the present time, there are no restrictions on vehicle travel across the private land. However, this road is in poor condition and a high clearance vehicle is recommended.

Trail Data
*************

Access: This trail can be traveled from about June first through October. The Gooseberry segment can be traveled separately with a vehicle shuttle or a return walk along the private dirt road. The Silver Creek section is best traveled on down to Fish Creek Campground. A 1 hour vehicle shuttle would be necessary.

Trailhead: At the northwest corner of Gooseberry Reservoir approximately 3 miles from the junction of SR 31 and SR 264.

Length: 8 miles for both segments.

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.

Travel Time: 4.5 hours from Gooseberry Reservoir to Fish Creek Trail.

Suitability: Trail is limited to foot and horse travel only. Cross country skiing is possible with adequate snow depths.

Trail Ends: At Fish Creek Trail, 2 miles from Fish Creek Campground.

Additional Information
*************

Recreational Opportunities: The area is inhabited by a variety of animal species, including mule deer, elk, moose, bear, lion, redtailed hawks, great blue herrons, dippers and western bluebirds in the spring. Beaver have built dams along many sections of each stream. Rainbow and cutthroat trout also inhabit these waters. Trail use is moderate throughout the summer and big game hunting seasons.

Geology: This trail passes through the North Horn Formation (approximately 60-70 million years old). This formation consists of mudstone, sandstone and limestone, Fossil clams, snails, fish and plants can be found. Sink holes, depressions, or bogs have formed in the North Horn Formation at some locations. The remains of ancient mammals (mammoths and mastodons) have been found in such areas on the forest. The Flagstaff Limestone (approximately 53-60 million years old) can be seen capping some of the hills in the area.

Special Considerations: This trail is in a travel restricted area (see Travel Map), and is restricted to toot, horse and mountain bike travel only. Mountain bike travel on the Silver Creek section is not recommended as bicycles are not permitted on the Fish Creek Trail, and a return ride would be necessary. Any drinking water obtained along the trail should be appropriately treated before use.
