Yellowstone, Wyoming
America's oldest national park and without a doubt one of the most famous and beloved, Yellowstone preserves one of the world's last intact temperate ecosystems. Located in a geologically active area, the park obligingly rocks 'n' rolls, spews and gurgles for visitors, a veritable miasma of geysers, fumaroles, earthquakes, and churning waterways set amidst the mountains and forests. Grey wolves, buffalo, grizzly bears, and elk roam the environs, eagles circle overhead, and wildflowers blossom in summer. The natural attractions read like a who's who of the park world: Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
And the fishing...ah, the fishing. Eight hundred miles of rivers, innumerable smaller backcountry streams, 175 lakes, and big (sometimes even gargantuan) clever trout just daring you to cast your line at them. None of the fish are stocked, so you'll be up against some truly wild fighters, among them brook, cutthroat, rainbow, brown, and lake trout. Many say it's the finest public trout fishing in the country, with something for every skill level and scenery as wild as the trout.
