Introduction: Except for Little Yosemite Valley, an outlier of Yosemite Valley, no other area in the Park receives such intensive backpacker use. Consequently, it is very desirable that you get a wilderness permit long before you start your overnight hike. The extreme popularity of this area is due in part to its supreme scenery, which is dominated by the Cathedral Range and the Sierra crest. In part its popularity is also due to its accessibility, for in a few hours' hiking time you can easily reach crest passes and subalpine lakes. How can one forget the alpenglow on the metamorphic Sierra crest? the form of twin-towered Cathedral Peak? the expansive panorama from Mt. Dana? the beauty of an alpine wildflower garden? the enormous granite wall below Clouds Rest? These and many other sights continue to lure backpackers and dayhikers to this area year after year.
