Seventy miles (a five-hour boat trip) southeast of Belize City brings you to Glover's Reef, a dream-come-true of island fantasy—white sand, blue sea, and coconut palms with a fringe of white water breaking over the nearby reef. It was named for pirate John Glover, who, in his own swashbuckling manner, also loved this offshore reef. The atoll is a circular necklace of almost continuous coral reef around an 80-square-mile lagoon with depths to 50 feet; the various colors of blue in the water are so intense they seem phony. Within the lagoon divers will find 700 shallow coral patches. And for the adventurer looking for sunken ships, the sea on the north and northeastern sides of the reef embraces the bones of at least four ships. This is a favorite destination for boaters large and small, including live-aboard dive boats that come from the United States and Belize City.
