Trying to come up with just ten adventures in the Rocky Mountains is like choosing your ten favorite Madonna incarnations—next to impossible, but fun as hell. In an area so rich in outdoor opportunities, what can't you do? There's water, there's trails, there's mountain faces and wild places and flowers and snow galore. YellowstoneThe young, raw mountains and vigorous waterways have become a sort of symbolic America, full of independent types and aggressive scenery.

So what can outdoorsy folk with a yen for action find in the Rockies? For starters, some of the best skiing in the world, both cross-country and downhill. Streams for paddling, white water, and stellar fishing. Trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding—and campsites galore when you've had enough for a day (or week or month or year). A mix of seriously forbidding and gentle mountain faces for climbers of all levels. Wildlife for watching. And scenic highways for those who'd rather see it all by car.

It goes without saying that the national parks and forests dotting the Rocky Mountains preserve and protect some of the most pristine scenery and engaging wildlife to be found in the U.S. Visit GORP's national parks and national forests pages for a state-by-state listing.
