Hemingway fans certainly know the Big Two-Hearted and Fox Rivers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. But Hemingway actually spent most of his early days in northwest Lower Michigan at a cabin on Walloon Lake. This country is the backdrop for most of the Nick Adams stories, many of which involve trout fishing. Quite appropriate, given that the area is home to some of the best and most storied water in the world.

Known as the Midwest's"golden triangle of flyfishing," this country is cut by many Blue Ribbon trout streams. At the center is the wine and orchard region of Traverse City, the largest town in northern Michigan and a place Hemingway himself often visited.

Every trout fisherman knows the AuSable River, where Trout Unlimited was born, and the Boardman River, on which Leonard Halladay tested the first Adams fly. The Manistee River is one of Michigan's biggest and best trout fisheries. And then there are the rest of the streams, lesser known outside these parts but certainly no less significant: the Betsy, Jordan, and Platte, among others, all home to stretches of Blue Ribbon-rated trout water.
