Peru: 20 Peak Adventures
Lake Titicaca: Polar Bear Club
By Rob Rachowiecki

Destination Peru Temperatures in the 50s mean that a leisurely float in the world's highest navigable lake (almost two and a half miles above sea level) will scare off all but the hardiest. But the idea of a quick dip in this record-holding body of water is irresistible to some swimmers. And why not? You can even scuba dive here, as Jacques Cousteau did while searching for the elusive giant Titicaca frog. The drawback? It's rural — very rural — and you'll need to bring all your own gear, including a dry suit and air compressor. Remember to adjust your diving tables for the altitude — the air is thin up here!
