Tom's Question:

I am going on a second chance honeymoon in Fiji. Other than the obvious, what do you suggest doing? We like water, tropical forests, and outdoor stuff. What can I expect to spend for a nice stay?

Answer:

Tom,

Because you didn't mention how much time you will take for that second honeymoon, I don't know how many adventures you can fit in. Therefore, my best advice is that you read the Lonely Planet guidebook on Fiji. It will give you far more useful detail than I can fit into this short space.

I can offer several tips. There are plenty of resorts where you could happily hole up. Some are nice and very reasonably priced; others are very expensive - e.g., Malcolm Forbes's private island. Although I haven't been in Fiji on a honeymoon (yet), I enjoyed circumnavigating the island rather than staying in one place (but don't miss the great seafaring museum in the capital).

I also recommend catching one of the many boats for a day trip to nearby islands (where there are often cultural music performances).

Fiji is about water, so consider coming prepared to snorkel or scuba dive. You can rent equipment but I've never found a rental snorkeling mask that fit as well as my own. Snorkeling in turquoise water above pristine reeks is a fine way to spend an afternoon. There are also many sea kayaking opportunities. Look into the Yanucas and Qamea.

Fijians are sometimes called the most gracious people on earth. Nevertheless, there is sometimes a bit a trouble between indigenous Fijians and Indian residents. As a matter of fact, a serious conflict is underway right now involving taking senior government officials as hostages. As your trip approaches, I suggest that you check with the State Department Citizen's Emergency Center at (202) 647-5225 or (202) 647-3000 or take a look at the Web site: travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html

By the way, flights to Fiji sometimes permit one or more stops along the way. You might consider dropping into Rarotonga in the Cook Islands or Tahiti (where you can make the short trip by air or sea to Raitea or Bora Bora).

Have a great trip!
