Gliding is very much a British sport—developed here in the 1930's as a way to carry troops noiselessly and cheaply over to the Continent. Since then, gliding has developed into a recreational activity in its own right. You'll be towed up by plane and set adrift in the endless and silent expanses of the sky. Even total beginners can try out the sport. Just don't eat too soon beforehand, especially if you're going to ask the instructor to loop the loop. You'll also get a chance to actually fly the thing, and with a wingspan of 15 to 22 meters and a top speed of 150 miles per hour, you won't feel underpowered, just maybe a little light-headed as you soar up on the thermals, dropping and rising like a bird.
