Weekend Wheeling in Denver
It's a Privilege
By Tom Barnhart
We have a saying here: " 'Tis a privilege to live in Colorado." This most certainly applies to the lucky mountain and road cyclists fortunate to inhabit the Front Range, specifically the Boulder-Denver metropolitan area.

Denver seen from the east. It only gets better . . .
The Front Range has a wealth of county parks and national forest lands where the mountain biking is simply stellar and the countryside contains many miles of road routes. We are also blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year; while it can be cold at times, the sun normally keeps many lower-level trails dry in the winter, extending the cycling season long after many other nearby cities' cyclists have traded their bikes for skis.
But while we Front Rangers may be lucky devils, the mountain bikers in the area tend to stay on established, well-known trails, rarely exploring some off-the-beaten paths. Case in point is a coworker of mine who rides twice a week but has done no more than three different trails.
I hope the following lesser-known rides will give visitors and locals some idea of the wealth of cycling opportunities here along the Front Range.
