GORP Guests Horace Holden - Whitewater Racer GORP Guest from May 10 to 30, 1999
 Horace Holden |
Horace Holden, Jr. was to the whitewater manor born. As the son of Horace Holden, Sr., the founder of Nantahala Outdoor Center, the largest canoe and kayak center in the nation, Horace took to the water at an early age."I grew up paddling. When I was a kid dad ran a camp called Camp Chattahoochee outside of Atlanta. We would spend almost everyday in the summer on the lakes."Horace went on to have a brilliant career in whitewater racing. His many accomplishments include being a U.S. National Team member from 1990 to 1997, competing in World Cup Series and World Championships. With partner Wayne Dickert, he earned the sole position in two person, closed canoe on the 1996 Olympic Team. Next year he went on to win first place at the 1997 National Championships open canoe solo and tandem with partner Wayne Dickert. The same year he won first place at the North Carolina State Games in the same categories. In 1995 he won the Champion International Whitewater Series 1995 overall title after winning in Vail and Durango, Colorado with partner Steve Holmes. A year earlier he was the 1994 one-person canoe National Champion. Quite an impressive record!
These days Horace is devoted to being a family man. He and his wife Alisa have two young sons, who he takes on frequent camping trips. A well-rounded outdoorsman, Horace enjoys mountain biking and hiking. He has travelled extensively in Central and South America and speaks Spanish. Horace has also travelled to most European countries. Horace is no longer a full-time professional whitewater racer. Right now he is employed at the Andrews/Murphy airport as a Certified Flight Instructor, and is working towards a career as a commercial airline pilot.
"Champion Whitewater" explores the attraction of whitewater racing. But you can also get it straight from the source. Horace was a GORP's forum guest from May 10 to May 30, 1999.
