Mike Finkel is an adventure writer and small-scale chicken farmer who lives in Bozeman, Montana, when he is not investigating some far-flung corner of the globe. Mike recently stopped into GORP's offices fresh off the plane from east Africa. While chatting with a couple GORP editors, Mike mused that he calls himself an adventure writer without quite knowing what that means."What is adventure? Is hiring an outfitter an adventure? Is Killington an adventure? I mean, you can have an adventure in your own backyard. Or not."
Well, adventure is in the living. And for a 30-year old guy, Mike has lived a wildly adventurous life. Mike has been on assignment on six continents: he has skied in Iran, golfed in Iceland, mountaineered in Greenland, backpacked in Tanzania, investigated crevasses in Alaska, ridden a yak in western China, rolled down a hill inside a giant beach ball in New Zealand, and explored more than a dozen other nations.

In the line of reportorial duty, Mike has volunteered to be an avalanche victim in Montana, leapt out of an airplane over the Mojave Desert, bicycled 5,000 miles across the United States, run 100 miles in northern California, ski jumped at Lake Placid, joined the U.S. Marines Mountain Warfare Training Center, skied the country's smallest ski area, bowled the world's largest bowling alley, covered two Olympic games, competed at the World Lumberjack Championships, and summited Kilimanjaro. He has also appeared on a television game show and has nearly been arrested for skiing down a runaway truck ramp.As you can probably tell, Mike especially loves skiing, any kind of skiing: downhill, cross-country, backcountry, sidecountry, telemark. And yes, Mike loves snowboarding.
"I hope to inspire people to become ski bums," Mike says.
