Omega Pacific Mountain Axe
By Paul Cleveland

Omega Pacific

The Mountain Axe was another model on the heavier end that garnered good marks. The stout head was comfortable to hold, with well-rounded edges and no angular protrusions along the gripping surface. This combined with a relatively light shaft to give a nice swing on steeper routes and smooth ledge-chopping.

The pick has deep teeth and positive clearance, which gave a good combination of climbing and self-arrest performance. Probing for cracks on long glacier slogs or plunging it all the way to the head for boot-axe belaying was no problem. Darin and I chose the Mountain Axe as the best overall axe because of performance and price. Chris also liked this axe, but cited weight as the reason it didn't make the top of his list.

Weight (70 cm): 1 pound, 8 ounces
UIAA rating: No rating
Price: $67
Pro: Good performance and price.
Con: On the heavy side.
Self-arrest: 4
Steep snow climbing: 4
Durability: 4
(Rating scale, 1 5: 1 = poor, 3 = average, 5 = excellent)
