Someone was thinking extra hard on this one: take a convertible pack, then add wheels and a telescoping handle to negotiate long airport corridors. Bingo, a whole new species of convertible luggage spontaneously mutates, offering a three-in-one approach to active travel luggage. It's a suitcase, it's a backpack, it's a wheeled tote.

The best of this breed use a solid convertible backpack design (read: full-blown suspension that's trail worthy) which includes frame-integrated wheels that hide beneath the hip belt during backpack mode. And just like non-wheeled convertibles, the whole affair modifies into to a civilized suitcase.

Personal Pick

The Cross Terrain by Eagle Creek ($300) is the epitome of a wheeled convertible pack, using the same quality Urethane wheels known to any in-line skater. At 6,250 cubic inches, this monster is big but still manages to tame unwieldy loads with a series of compression straps.

A generous lumbar pad and adjustable shoulder straps and hip belt make the Cross Terrain behave like the good backpack that it is. Other notable features include internal taped seam construction, detachable day pack, and a retractable telescoping handle that doesn't gouge your spine during backpack hauls.
