Gaiters for Wet Weather

Marcia's Question:

We are planning to hike Ireland in September. I hear that Ireland can be very wet. Do you recommend gaiters for hiking? I have GORE-TEX. top and bottom. Do I need my regular hiking boots or are my low-top day hikers adequate?

Hi Marcia,

I'm envious! You're crossing the big pond [that would be the Atlantic Ocean] at a dazzlingly gorgeous (and relatively midge-free) season. And you heard right, though mere"wet" is not sufficiently descriptive of the Emerald Isle's stormy potential. Try soggy, boggy, marshy, misty, drizzly, peaty, stormy . . . how else could Ireland get so green?

No matter what hiking footwear you decide to wear, you should absolutely bring your gaiters. Think of gaiters as little tents for your boots. They keep footgear dryer and less muddy, prevent drips or debris from entering at the ankle, and protect your shins from sharp grasses and biting midges. With gaiters on you can slosh right through muckholes and out the other side with aplomb. To be super-duper dry, wear your rainpants over the gaiters (not tucked in). Don't forget to treat your boots to a waterproofing session before heading out!
