Boot Soles with High Traction
Trish's Question:
As a keen hiker, who is very nervous on steep down slopes, could you recommend a boot or tread which would provide the best traction for me? I do use poles, which help, but I am very nervous about trusting the grip on my boots.
Trish Smith
Annie's Answer:
That's a tall wish, Trish. First, your trepidation is shared with many. Facing down the fall line can be a real leap of faith, as any hiker and skier will tell you. But it's one you gotta make if you want to fully enjoy your backcountry rambles.
Let's talk traction: When you step forward, adhesive friction is applied by the weight of your body positioned over your feet. Picture yourself striding through a flowery meadow, confident, upright, eyes focused on some distant sexy lads bathing in a clear pond.
Beneath your feet the ground begins to slope, and you unconsciously lean forward to maintain both your perpendicular relationship to the earth and your speed. Suddenly the field drops off and you're headed down a steep ravine. Still, you keep your weight centered over your feet and you think you're going to make it ... until you see the boys hiking away. Rats. With a sad shrug you slacken your pace, lean back into the hillside, and WHUMP! You're on your butt. Bottom line: commit to the fall line, don't lean back, and you'll be a happy hiker!
Traction can be aided by your footwear choice. I prefer a defined, cutaway heel that catches edges or roots, which you'll find on most Vibram-shod hiking boots, like my L.L.Bean Gore-Tex Cresta Hikers. Steer away from trail-running shoes. And while climbing-shoe manufacturers offer sticky-soled (softer rubber)"approach" boots, the caveat here is that they don't usually feature heels and the rubber definitely wears out faster.
