How to use ascenders
Chris's Question:
I'm going to Costa Rica and I need a way to get up a tree with out putting spikes in it. I was thinking of ascenders but I have no idea what I'm doing. Is there a Mountainering 101 course out there or can you tell me what I need?
Chris McGarry
Annie's Answer:
Ascenders are mechanical camming devices used with webbing footloops called"aiders" to climb fixed lines. Used in pairs, each right- or left-oriented ascender slides up the rope when unweighted, but once weighted, the cam grips and locks onto the rope.
Don't be fooled: these are not magic genies to spirit you effortlessly up a rope and into your rainforest canopy. Climbing with ascenders is still a grunt, and using them requires a harness and a clear, practical knowledge of basic anchor systems. Before you attempt setting an anchor, visit the GORP Climbing area for a good overview, then get a good book reference, and then take a climbing course to literally learn the ropes.
While there are various manufacturers of ascenders, Petzl is a widely available brand (found at climbing or caving specialty shops) and a superior all-around choice.
Be forewarned: Ascenders come with big-time disclaimers. If you don't know how to use them, learn from someone who can demonstrate the techniques and help you practice in controlled conditions. You might consider hiring a mountain guide to save sweat and frustration and avoid the potential of a terminally brief trial-and-error curve.
