Melt Some Snow

Warm up in the snow

If wrapping yourself up like a fleece burrito sounds cozy, you're not alone (just think of all the Green Bay Packer fans!). But you might consider a wintry destination with a roaring fire to return to. Which brings us to ski towns. February conveniently falls between the Christmas rush and Spring vacation, so you won't be battling the crowds when you head off into the silent pine forests and lay fresh tracks with your rented snowshoes.

The resorts with the best slopes don't always make for the best walking. In fact, this is a great chance to head to the lesser known areas, so you'll really have the place to yourself. Many of these resorts are on land belonging to the U.S. Forest Service. For starters, you might check out: Wolf Creek Ski Area, Colorado, Sleeping Giant Ski Area, Wyoming, Lost Trail Powder Mountain, Montana, Alyeska Resort, Alaska, or Okemo Mountain Resort, Vermont. Or, to find something closer to home, try www.ski-guide.com/finder.cfm, click on"U.S. Forest Service Land" and "cross-country" and find the resort that's easy on the odometer.
