Where can I find hiking groups for moms with infants?
Dana's Question:
Do you know of any hiking groups for moms with infants along the Front Range in Colorado? My son is five months old and I am looking forward to hiking this summer, and am hoping to find other moms and dads who share the same interest.

Alice's Answer:
Dana,
I don't know of any such groups in your area, but if you can't find one, consider starting your own. Your son will be at an ideal age for outings in his child carrier this summer, and you're right-a little companionship for both of you would be ideal.
Start by checking with local outdoors stores and area hiking clubs; perhaps someone there might know of other like-minded parents. Network with everyone you know, too, mentioning your hope of finding parent and tot hiking partners. Eventually, you and another family or families are bound to hook up. All you need are one or two such like-minded buddies to get started.
Four years ago, when my son was almost three, I happened to meet three other moms with kids the same age in a kids'"gym" class. We started our own playgroup and have been meeting in one form or another ever since for a variety of activities. We've done plenty of hikes and picnics, and last summer we all spent a weekend at a backcountry hut in the White Mountains of New Hampshire; we'll take the same trip this summer. We've grown so close that not only do we share hikes and birthdays, but we also gather for major holidays.
I wish the same luck for you: not only that you find hiking partners, but that you and your son end up with some lifelong friends as well.
Dana, I suggest you also try posting your interest in our GORP Family Forum. With luck, some other GORPERS might be in your area.
