John Grassy is a writer whose lifelong appreciation of nature shows up frequently in his work. John's personal pursuit of such activities as angling, birding, paddling, hunting, and hiking enrich the books, essays, and articles he has written or edited in the areas of natural history, conservation, and ecology.

John's work includes materials for readers of all ages; his books for children and young readers have explored the wonders of ants and bees, apes and monkeys, and North American mammals, including a book on mammals in 1997 for the National Audubon Society's First Field Guide series. John has written or coauthored three other Audubon guides, the most recent being two volumes in the forthcoming Audubon Guides to the National Wildlife Refuges series (St. Martins Griffen). John served as lead writer for the series.

A native Midwesterner, John has lived for the past decade in Montana. He shares a house with his wife, Dorothy, their five-year-old boy, Sam, and a herd of dogs and cats. John is active in local and regional conservation efforts.

In 2000, John served as GORP's wildlife expert.
