The Furry Fisher

Colin's Question:
What do fisher cats look like?

— Colin

John's Answer:
Colin has a son who would like to know what a “fisher cat” looks like. Colin and his family recently moved from Colorado to New Hampshire, a part of the world where the fisher roams. Also, he wonders if there is a good online source where he and his son might find a picture of a fisher and learn more about them.

I've never heard the expression “fisher cat,” but it makes sense, given this handsome and richly-furred mammal's size and overall appearance. The fisher is colored a deep brown and typically measures between 30 and 41 inches in length, much larger than either the mink or the pine marten, two of its close relatives in the weasel family. Given its size and proportions, the fisher just might be mistaken by someone for a cat, assuming they were lucky enough to glimpse one in the first place. A resident of dense forests, the fisher is a solitary creature, largely nocturnal, and very elusive. Consider yourself extremely lucky (and determined) if you can find its tracks in the snow, as it ranges widely throughout its territory at this time of year.

More than likely, you'll have to find a fisher in a field guide. And there is a great online source for reading more about fishers and their habits. The source is called E Nature; the address is www.enature.com.
