Kajak Sport's Millennium

Kathi's Question:
Jonathan, I'm looking for a kayak dealer that sells "Millennium" sea kayaks. Millennium is not the brand name, but a style they sell.

Thanks,
Kathi

Jonathan's Answer:
Kathi, the kayak you're looking for is one of my favorites, the Millennium from Kajak Sport.

Kajak Sport is a Finnish company that produces high-quality sea kayaks, many of which are in the always lovely Greenland style. The Millennium is quite simply one of the most graceful fiberglass sea kayaks I've ever seen, long (18' 3") and lean (22"), with a graceful, sweeping sheer line and a low profile. It's an extremely seaworthy boat with a surprising degree of final stability. It was designed with a highly rockered keel, which makes for a very maneuverable craft in spite of the length, and an adjustable skeg to assist with tracking in quartering seas.

The only thing the Millennium doesn't have is a lot of space, especially since the rear cargo area is divided by the skeg trunk. However, there is enough room for a two-week trip, as long as your destination is not an area where you need to carry your own water. And besides, you don't expect a Ferrari to have a lot of luggage space, do you?

Kajak Sport makes another model, the Viking, suited for smaller paddlers. It's 16'3" by 22". And just so you don't think I'm prejudiced in some way, they also make one of the danged ugliest double kayaks I've ever seen.

Kajak Sport's main U.S. office is in Massachusetts; call them at (617) 834-5623 and they can tell you where the nearest distributor to you is. Their website is at www.gokajaksport.com.

Happy paddling,

—Jonathan
