Do braces and hiking sticks work for sore knees?

Pam's Question:
I have sore knees after steep rocky descents. I have never tried hiking sticks, but am thinking about it. Someone suggested trying drugstore knee braces, have you ever tried them?

Dear Pam —

Yes, I've used them, and I've found that for me, at least, they do help. The heavier, bulkier, and more supportive (also more expensive) the brace, the better. The flimsy one-size-fits-all kinds aren't much better than Ace bandages. If you have serious knee problems, you might consider getting a recommendation from your doctor.

But quite honestly, for me, knee braces don't work half as well as hiking sticks.

For knee problems, use two hiking sticks, not one. Both knees need support. Telescoping hiking sticks with little springs in them take an enormous amount of pressure off your knees. When you have to take a big step down from a rock, say, to the ground, you can plant the sticks and lean on them. A lot of your weight will then be supported by your arms and the sticks, so you won't have all your weight bearing down on your knees.

Note that telescoping sticks are recommended for tough terrain because if you get into a situation where you need to use your hands, you can fold them up and attach them to your pack with bungee cords or straps.
