Meet the Expert

Don Mellor Don Mellor
Say hello to Don Mellor, GORP's climbing expert. Don has climbed most of America's premier rock faces, from the big walls of Yosemite to the canyons of Colorado and Utah to the alpine peaks of the Tetons. His favorite climbs, however, are in his own backyard, the alpine peaks of the Adirondacks.

Don has been climbing, teaching climbing, and writing about climbing for more than twenty-five years. He has scaled El Capitan, tackled the Diamond at Long's Peak, and established more than 100 first ascents in his beloved Adirondacks. Don is a guide for Adirondack Rock and River Guide Service and the director of Northwood School's Wilderness Skills Program. He is the author of Rock Climbing: A Trailside Guide, Climbing in the Adirondacks, and the soon-to-be-released American Rock. He lives in Lake Placid, New York with his eight-year-old daughter Elise (who loves climbing) and his wife Janet, an architect (who doesn't see the point).
