Day Two was mostly unalloyed joy, despite the rigors of Stevens Pass. Clear skies, an almost uninterrupted 40-mile downhill, a following wind and mountain scenery provided a memory many will cherish for years . . .

GORP Log

For the people who are taking the challenge on with new eyes and a body new to pedaling, Stevens Pass was an unparalleled emotional accomplishment. The first really big hill always is. If anyone deserves the applause and support of friends and family and well-wishing onlookers, it is these people: long on the hill, slow and steady of the pedal, but of an iron determination.

Messages of gratitude, encouragement, and love for the riders are pouring in from all around North America. Occasionally a promise is made — a promise inspired by a Big Rider — that highlights the mission of the American Lung Association:

"Keeper (Rider #2125),
My pledge to you . . . The next time I see you I will be a non-smoker. As you know, inspiring me to do this may very well save my life. Thank you for being the incredible person you are!
—Carrie Faye"
