GORP Rides Across America

Day 43: July 31, 2000, Update

Today's Miles: 105.8Miles since Seattle: 2947

Ready to Rumble

When this long 105-mile day began, we packed rain gear. It was going to be a day during which we would need it. The ride into Pennsylvania was not only long and wet, it was also tough and rather dangerous. Hill after hill after hill. And lots of traffic . . . mostly trucks.

A Different Kind of Summit

A memorable stop for me was lunch at the Summit Diner — a favorite among the truckers who roll through. We dined on stuffed pepper soup, grilled ham and cheese, grilled chicken-strip sandwiches, root beer floats, and peach custard Pie. The pie was homemade and truly delicious. (The owner was not only a great cook, she even made a contribution to the American Lung Association.) After we ate, we biked over the next hill and came upon the water stop. The people there were totally soaked. Somehow we had missed the first bit of rain just one-tenth of a mile away.

A Steady Threat

There was an obvious and continuing threat of rain, but we often had time to notice it coming. On one occasion, we slipped into a convenience store. Phil Dettmer biked up right behind us without his shirt on. He had already been soaked and now couldn't even see because the rain was blinding. He stayed with us and dried off. At least there was lots of stuff to eat and drink at the convenience store.

Once the rain stopped, we got ourselves up and out of our comfortable, relaxed, seated positions and prepared to ride . . . except I had a flat. When that was repaired — finally — we got back on the road. There were many miles to go.

Unfortunately, we didn't stay dry for long. The next downpour came fast and hard. The thunder shocked us. Lightening streaked across the sky and hail pelted our skin. I couldn't see — despite my eye protection. It was so bad that even though we were soaked, we sought shelter on someone's porch for about half an hour. We just wanted to be at our day's destination.

This was my scariest day of biking. It was hard and wet and long. The trucks seemed to get faster and closer to my left ear, sometimes so much so that my bike and body shook as they passed. Still, the wet scenery was spectacular. Today's ride provided each of us with an uplifting sense of accomplishment. We were still glad when it was over.

Only the Best

When we finally reached the end of the day, we were we were hungry, cold and wet. We were also informed that the cafeteria had closed, but that pizza on the way. It was the best pizza I've ever eaten. I had the best shower I've ever taken. I enjoyed the best sleep ever.
