Pulling Our Weight

Today provided an opportunity for the Ventura/Santa Barbara Chapter of the ALA to do our part in the Big Ride: it was our turn to pull the Chain of Hope. Since I'm the weakest link in our chapter's chain, we thought it best I start out in the morning while I was fresh and the route was calm.

The Ventura/Santa Barbara Chapter

At first I thought I wasn't strong enough to manage pulling the burly chariot. When we were planning this event I requested to be the group cheerleader instead of actually pulling the Chain of Hope behind me. No such luck. Yet much to my surprise, I had no problem; most of the time I couldn't tell I was pulling anything at all.

Dave Nevala, our ride photographer and team member, joined us briefly during the first leg. His presence provided the extra energy I needed to help me complete my leg of the pull. It gave me an amazing sense of satisfaction that I, on some level, had reached a par with the other riders. That I had gained enough strength as an individual rider to manage to pull the Chain of Hope without any stress felt wonderful. Most importantly, I was adding to the energy of this movement to generate a greater presence of hope for an improved future.

Break time!

Break time!

Jim Hosp took the second segment, pulling the Chain of Hope along some more strenuous, rolling hills. The third leg was taken by our team's secret weapon Nathan Fairman. Nathan masterfully climbed our challenging hill faster then a speeding bullet. Paul Fairman, Nathan's dad and honorary member of our team, pulled the chariot for the final 10 miles. Paul mastered a challenging stretch of road under construction so his son could briefly enjoy an experience we've all probably dreamt of: playing Tarzan. Nathan had discovered — via word from one of the locals — a ropeswing out over the lake, so he changed into his swim trunks and swung like a monkey out into the water.

No Autographs, Please

Some local girls from Dakota greeted us with the gift of homemade chocolate chip squares and the option of a beautiful braided bracelet in exchange for a brief interview. I have a hunch there's a possible reporter in the future for the one doing the interviews. She had the questions all written out: what's your name, where are you from, how old you are, how many times have you done the big ride, what food do you miss and what question you most dislike being asked. Seeing as I've only got 5 bracelets on so far, there's always room for one more.

Tomorrow's Jouranlists

Tomorrow's jouranlists

What a wonderful day. Though the sky was cloudy, the threat of rain was minimal as we traveled through the Mississippi Valley from Winona, Minnesota to Viroqua, Wisconsin across yet another boarder. The morning was cool, but not as cold as our nightmare day yesterday. The sun even attempted to make an appearance while we braved the steep inclines at the end of a pleasantly short 65-mile day.

On the high seas

On the high seas

After the interrogation from the locals, we found the cutest little cafi for lunch, Thirsty Turtle, deciding to trade our bikes for a troll in the boat out front before enjoying the cuisine.

Lia Pugliese contributed this report.
