District Descriptions
Scattered throughout the southern half of the state, the districts of the Mark Twain National Forest are almost like distinct parks.
The Ava/Cassville/ Willow Springs District is located in southwestern Missouri, where the forest gives way to native prairie glades. This diversity of natural surroundings means that beautiful scenery is plentiful.
Located at the edge of the Ozarks, where the oak-hickory forest joins the tall grass prairie, the Cedar Creek District provides a variety of recreational experiences and wildlife habitats. With approximately 15,000 acres in Boone and Callaway counties, Cedar Creek District is one of the largest areas of public land north of the Missouri River.
The Doniphan District in southern Missouri is composed of oak-hickory forest and scattered stands of native short leaf pine. Nestled between the Eleven Point River on its west and the Current River on its east, Doniphan is a perfect location for water recreation as well as hiking, camping, and horseback riding.
Situated in the Ozark countryside of southern Missouri, the Eleven Point District offers a vast array of opportunities for sportsmen and nature enthusiasts alike. Well known for the impressive river that is its namesake, water recreation is particularly popular in this district.
The Houston/Rolla District is located just south of Interstate 44 between Rolla and Fort Leonard Wood. This area, part of the Salem Plateau, is typically hilly, but unlike most hills and mountains, the rolling terrain of the Houston/Rolla District was formed by the erosion of streams and rivers.
The Poplar Bluff Ranger District is located in southeastern Missouri between Poplar Bluff and Piedmont. The district lies at the southeastern edge of the Ozarks where the forest starts to give way to the Mississippi lowlands.
Although two separate areas, the Potosi/Fredericktown District is managed by the District Ranger in Potosi. The Potosi District offers a large variety of recreational opportunities, from the highly developed Council Bluff Recreation Area to primitive camping along any of the several sections of the Ozark Trail. Activity in the Fredericktown District centers around its recreation areas at Silver Mines, Marble Creek, and Crane Lake, and at the Rock Pike Mountain Wilderness.
Located just a couple of hours from St. Louis, the Salem Ranger District provides an opportunity to get back to nature with numerous recreational activities and an abundance of plant and animal life.
